The Supreme Court dismissed an application filed by Abu Salem seeking premature release on the ground that he had completed 25 years of imprisonment, as allegedly envisaged under the India–Portugal Extradition Treaty.
Salem, who was convicted under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) in connection with the 1993 Bombay blasts, contended that his continued incarceration beyond 25 years was impermissible in light of the assurances given at the time of his extradition from Portugal.
Rejecting the plea, the Supreme Court declined to grant him relief at this stage. However, the Court granted Salem liberty to approach the appropriate High Court for redressal of his grievance in accordance with law.
