The Allahabad High Court Justice Yashwant Varma has resigned by writing to Droupadi Murmu amid a major corruption controversy after the recovery of burnt currency notes from his official residence in Delhi.
Following the incident, the Chief Justice constituted a three-judge in-house inquiry committee to investigate the matter and Justice Varma was relieved of judicial work pending investigation. The Supreme Court also made public parts of the inquiry material, including visuals of burnt currency, an unprecedented step.
He was transferred to the Allahabad High Court during the inquiry. The committee examined evidence and reported prima facie findings of misconduct. He denied the allegations, stating he had no knowledge of the cash and later challenged the inquiry before the Supreme Court.
Following the findings, impeachment proceedings were initiated in Parliament.
