Chief Justice of India Surya Kant expressed strong displeasure over a serious administrative lapse in the Supreme Court Registry after it was brought to the Court’s notice that a petition, already dismissed by a three-judge Bench, was subsequently listed before another Bench.

Terming the incident “extremely disturbing,” the CJI observed that such lapses strike at the very credibility of the institution and cannot be brushed aside as routine errors. He remarked that Registry officials appear to be functioning under the impression that they are “permanent,” underscoring the need for accountability within the administrative machinery of the Court.

The Chief Justice assured that the issue would not end with a mere oral reprimand and announced that he would initiate a deeper administrative probe into the functioning of the Registry. He indicated that officials responsible for the lapse would be identified and questioned, and systemic reforms would be undertaken to prevent recurrence of such situations.
