Delhi Court Grants Bail to JNU Students Arrested After Protest March Turned Violent

Bail to JNU protest students

A Delhi court has granted bail to 14 students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) who were arrested in connection with a protest march that allegedly turned violent near Vasant Kunj North.

The case, registered as FIR No. 76/2026 at PS Vasant Kunj North, invoked provisions under Sections 221, 121(1) and 132(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). According to the prosecution, the students attempted to take out a march of around 300–350 persons towards India Gate without permission, broke police barricades, and scuffled with police personnel, resulting in injuries to 27 officials. The police sought 14 days’ judicial custody, citing the seriousness of allegations and apprehension of further violence.

The accused students, however, contended that they were peacefully protesting against certain university-related issues and UGC Regulations, and denied engaging in violence. They alleged that some of them sustained injuries after being dragged and assaulted during detention. The defence argued that no specific overt acts were attributed to the accused, that the offences carry a maximum punishment of five years, and that the students have no criminal antecedents.

After hearing both sides and perusing the case diary, the court observed that while the allegations are serious and injuries to police officials cannot be taken lightly, the offences are punishable up to five years and the accused are students with no record of being habitual offenders. Considering the overall facts and circumstances, the court admitted them to bail on furnishing bonds of ?25,000 each with one surety of like amount.

The bail is subject to conditions, including non-tampering with evidence, refraining from influencing witnesses, not committing any offence while on bail, maintaining updated contact details, and appearing before the court on all dates of hearing.
