Kerala High Court Allows Release of Government Law College Magazine Amid Election Notification

Joel Jexon v. Mahatma Gandhi University [Decided on 01 August, 2025]

The Kerala High Court granted interim relief to students of Government Law College, Ernakulam, permitting them to proceed with the release of their college magazine on August 5, 2025, despite the possibility of a students’ union election notification being issued by Mahatma Gandhi University prior to that date.

The petitioners approached the Court seeking permission to release the college magazine as scheduled, fearing that the university’s election notification might impose restrictions under rules governing pre-election conduct, potentially stalling the event. They contended that the release was a long-planned part of the college’s 150th anniversary celebrations, and any disruption would unfairly affect the student community’s right to expression and participation in academic life.

The case was heard by Justice N. Nagaresh, who recorded the presence of the Standing Counsel for Mahatma Gandhi University and the Government Pleader for the Principal of the Law College. Acknowledging the significance of the 150th year of the institution and the absence of any adverse objections from the university at the preliminary stage, the Court allowed the petitioners to proceed with the magazine release as scheduled.

The matter has been admitted and is now listed for further hearing on August 12, 2025.
