SCBA & SCAORA Condemn Social Media Calls Seeking CJI Surya Kant’s Resignation

Supreme Court Judicial Dignity

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) have issued separate resolutions condemning social media statements seeking the resignation of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant.

In a resolution dated October 12, 2026, the SCBA said that every person has the opportunity to approach courts and seek remedies in accordance with law. It added that statements of this nature undermine the institution of the judiciary and amount to an attempt to interfere with the administration of justice. The resolution stated.

“

“The Supreme Court Bar Association condemns statements circulated on social media seeking the resignation of the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India. Every person has the opportunity to approach the courts and seek remedies in accordance with law. Statements of this nature belittle the institution of the judiciary and amounts to an attempt to interfere with the administration of justice. The SCBA calls upon its members and all other individuals to maintain the dignity and decorum of the Supreme Court of India.”

SCAORA, in its resolution issued on the same day, expressed “strong disapproval” of statements calling for the CJI’s resignation. It stated that grievances concerning judicial functioning must be raised through appropriate legal and constitutional channels.

“

“The Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) expresses its strong disapproval of statements made in the public domain calling for the resignation of the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India. The judiciary is a constitutional institution entrusted with the responsibility of upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all citizens. Any grievance concerning judicial functioning must be raised through appropriate legal and constitutional channels. Public statements seeking the resignation of the head of the judiciary risk undermining the dignity of the office and public confidence in the institution.

SCAORA urges all concerned to respect the independence of the judiciary and maintain the dignity and decorum of the Supreme Court of India. The judicial process must be allowed to function independently, without pressure or interference.”

The resolutions came amid a controversy over a social media post by the Kerala Congress unit calling for CJI Surya Kant’s resignation. The post followed the CJI’s remarks that law and order was not within his direct remit, in the context of protests in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The controversy has unfolded alongside developments concerning the protests against Gyanesh Kumar and allegations of police action against lawyers who gathered in Delhi. The SCBA had earlier sought the CJI’s urgent intervention after several advocates were reportedly detained during the protests on October 10.

On October 12, the Supreme Court agreed to hear pleas concerning the alleged assault and detention of lawyers. During the proceedings, the CJI emphasised that democratic activities must be allowed but that the functioning of the Supreme Court should not be obstructed or drawn into political activity.
