Centre Orders Delhi Gymkhana Club To Hand Over by June 5; Invokes Public Purpose Clause In Lease

Delhi Gymkhana lease takeover

The Central Government has directed the Delhi Gymkhana Club to hand over possession of its Safdarjung Road premises by June 5, 2026, invoking the public purpose clause in the lease deed and citing defence infrastructure and public security requirements.

In a communication dated May 22, 2026, issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs through the Land & Development Office (L&DO), the Government said the premises, originally leased to the erstwhile Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd. (now Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd.) for maintaining a social and sporting club, are now required for urgent public purposes.

According to the communication, the land, located in a “highly sensitive and strategic area” of Delhi, is considered critical for strengthening defence infrastructure, governance infrastructure, and other public-interest projects, particularly in conjunction with adjoining government lands.

Invoking Clause 4 of the lease deed, which permits re-entry if the premises are required for a public purpose, the government stated that the President of India, acting through the L&DO, has determined the lease and ordered re-entry into the property with immediate effect.

The order states that the entire land parcel, along with all buildings, structures, lawns, and fittings, would vest in the lessor upon such re-entry.

The club has been directed to hand over peaceful possession on June 5, failing which possession would be taken in accordance with law. The communication also asks police authorities to make necessary arrangements and provide adequate force during the takeover process.
