SC Appoints Former CJI DY Chandrachud As Mediator In Rani Kapur–Priya Kapur Family Trust Dispute

Rani Kapur v. Priya Sachdev Kapur & Ors., SLP(C) No. 13943-13945/2026 XIV [order dated May 07, 2026]
family trust mediation dispute

The Supreme Court today appointed former Chief Justice of India, Justice D. Y. Chandrachud, as mediator to resolve the ongoing dispute between Rani Kapur and Priya Sachdev Kapur concerning the Rani Kapur Family Trust and control over the Sona Group family assets.

A Bench of Justice J. B. Pardiwala and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan passed the order after all parties consented to mediation. The Court also requested family members to refrain from making public statements or social media posts relating to the dispute, observing that the matter should remain confined within the family and not become a source of public spectacle.

The Bench emphasised that the mediation proceedings would be restricted to disputes among family members and directed all parties to participate with an open mind in an effort to secure an early resolution. The Court said it would await a preliminary report from the mediator before taking up the matter again in August.

The dispute centres around the creation and administration of the Rani Kapur Family Trust, which Rani Kapur has challenged as fraudulent. She has alleged that after suffering a stroke in 2017, her late son Sunjay Kapur and his wife Priya Kapur took advantage of her medical condition and trust to transfer family assets into the trust structure without informed consent.

According to her case, she was made to sign various documents, including blank papers, under the guise of administrative formalities. Rani Kapur has further alleged that following Sunjay Kapur’s death in June last year, Priya Kapur moved quickly to assume control over key entities of the Sona Group, leaving her effectively excluded from substantial family assets.

Parallel proceedings concerning Sunjay Kapur’s estate and related assets are also pending before the Delhi High Court, where it has granted interim relief to Karishma Kapoor and ex-husband late Sanjay Kapur’s children- Samaira Kapur and Kiaan Kapur.
