The Supreme Court has refused to entertain a petition seeking directions to petrol pumps to prominently disclose the percentage of ethanol blended in petrol being dispensed and to mention the ethanol content separately on fuel bills.
Advocate N.K. Goswami, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that consumers have a right to know the composition of the fuel they are purchasing, pointing out that the petrol receipt does not mention the ethanol content. He also referred to the Attorney General’s earlier submission that ethanol blending was an “experiment” and sought an affidavit from the Central Government on the issue.
The Attorney General responded that the petitioner was effectively seeking to make the Government of India answerable to him. Goswami clarified that his plea was not for his personal benefit but concerned the right of citizens to know what they are purchasing.
The Supreme Court declined to entertain the petition but granted liberty to the petitioner to approach the appropriate High Court with the grievance.
