Supreme Court to Consider Laying Guidelines in “Shoe-Throwing” Incident Involving CJI; No Immediate Action Against Advocate Rakesh Kishore

Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India, on October 27, 2025, refused to issue a notice to Advocate Rakesh Kishore in connection with the recent ‘shoe-throwing’ incident involving the Chief Justice of India. The Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi, observed that reopening the matter would only prolong public discussion and media focus for weeks. Emphasising the need for restraint over reaction, the Court deferred immediate contempt or disciplinary proceedings and instead directed attention toward framing preventive guidelines to uphold decorum and dignity within courtrooms.

The Bench stated it was “not closing anything” and would revisit the matter, probably after one week, to explore appropriate safeguards and guidelines.

The matter arose on October 6, 2025, when, during Supreme Court proceedings, advocate Rakesh Kishore attempted to throw a shoe at the dais of CJI Gavai and Justice Vinod Chandran. The Bar Council of India suspended Mr Kishore’s licence shortly thereafter.
