The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice on a plea seeking directions for the time-bound filling of vacancies in State Human Rights Commissions (SHRCs) across the country.
The petition, filed by the Association of Retired Judges of Supreme Court and High Courts of India, highlights prolonged vacancies and non-functioning of several SHRCs and seeks their effective constitution and staffing in accordance with the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 and the Supreme Court’s directions in D.K. Basu v. State of West Bengal.
The petitioners have also sought time-bound directions for filling vacancies of Chairpersons and Members, constituting defunct SHRCs, providing mandatory administrative staff and ensuring publication of annual reports.
