The Supreme Court has dismissed a plea seeking a separate NEET examination exclusively for homeopathy courses, reaffirming the validity of the common entrance framework for medical admissions.
A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Viswanathan declined to interfere with the existing system, noting that the common NEET examination has already been upheld and continues to govern admissions across medical disciplines. The petitioners had argued that homeopathy is a distinct field and therefore warrants an independent entrance test.
Opposing the plea, the National Commission for Homeopathy submitted that admissions are based on the 10+2 science curriculum, which provides a uniform academic foundation for all medical aspirants. It further emphasized that the current system is consistent with norms prescribed by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and ensures standardisation in the admission process.
While dismissing the petition, the Court also made oral observations questioning the underlying motive, indicating that the issue appeared to be driven more by institutional or commercial interests of certain colleges rather than any genuine academic necessity.
