In a significant relief for medical students and the Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (HIMSR), the Supreme Court of India has restored 150 MBBS seats and 49 Postgraduate (PG) seats for the Academic Year 2026–27, ensuring continuity in admissions and academic operations.
By its order dated 27 May 2026, the Supreme Court directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to immediately open its online portal to enable HIMSR to upload its mandatory disclosure report, observing that procedural barriers cannot be allowed to obstruct academic functioning where no deficiencies exist.
The Court also granted deemed consent of affiliation to HIMSR for the current academic year, thereby ensuring that the admission process proceeds without administrative impediments.
In a major student-centric direction, the Court ordered Jamia Hamdard to issue enrolment numbers to all 49 postgraduate students admitted pursuant to the Supreme Court’s interim order dated 11 February 2026, ensuring that students admitted under judicial protection are not prejudiced.
The Court further directed the petitioners to maintain a separate account in respect of fees and related financial receipts, pending further proceedings.
The present order follows interim protections granted by the Supreme Court on 27 January 2026 and 11 February 2026 in SLP (C) No. 3280 of 2026, where the Court had emphasised that students should not become collateral victims of internal governance disputes.
The Court also took note of the fact that 150 MBBS seats had lapsed in the 2025–26 academic cycle, not due to any academic or infrastructural deficiency, but owing to administrative paralysis arising from internal disputes. The present directions aim to prevent recurrence of such loss of valuable national medical capacity.
