Andhra Pradesh High Court Issues Notice on YSR Congress Party’s Plea Challenging Blocking of Its Facebook Page

YSRCP Facebook Blocking Challenge

The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday issued notice on a writ petition filed by the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) challenging the blocking of its official Facebook page in India and seeking disclosure of the government order or notification that led to the action.

According to the petition, the party’s Facebook page became inaccessible to users in India on 9 June 2026 following a communication from Meta. YSRCP contends that neither the notification nor the communication identified the specific content alleged to be unlawful, the authority issuing the blocking direction, or the statutory basis for the restriction.

The petition seeks a declaration that intermediaries acting under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000 are under an implied obligation to furnish affected account holders with a copy of the government order or notification directing the blocking of content. It is argued that the denial of such information infringes the party’s right to freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution and deprives it of an effective opportunity to challenge the blocking action.

YSRCP has also sought directions to Meta to disclose all notices, orders or communications received from any government authority pursuant to which access to its Facebook page was restricted, along with the identity of the issuing authority and details of the specific content that allegedly warranted blocking.

Taking note of the submissions, the High Court issued notice to the respondents and sought their response in the matter.
