The Calcutta High Court granted interim relief to a student whose admission offer was withdrawn following a revision of the merit list by the Indian Statistical Institute, IIM Calcutta and IIT Kharagpur.
Observing that a student cannot be penalised for an error committed by the authorities, the Court emphasised that once an admission offer is made, accepted and acted upon, the institutions are bound by the doctrine of legitimate expectation.
The Court further directed the respondents to explore increasing the number of seats to accommodate the petitioner, noting that the mistake lay entirely with the institutions.
