The Delhi Government’s Home (Police-II) Department has issued a notification authorising the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, to exercise the powers of a detaining authority under the National Security Act, 1980 (NSA) for a period of three months, from July 19, 2026, to October 18, 2026.

The notification, issued on July 15, 2026, states that the Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, being satisfied that it is necessary to do so, has exercised the powers conferred under Section 3(3), read with Section 2(e), of the National Security Act, 1980.

Under the notification, the Commissioner of Police will be empowered to exercise the powers of a detaining authority under Section 3(2) of the NSA during the specified period. Section 3(2) empowers the authorised authority to order preventive detention in specified circumstances to prevent a person from acting in a manner prejudicial to the defence of India, the security of the State, the maintenance of public order, or the maintenance of essential supplies and services.

Note: After the notification attracted attention on social media, the Delhi Police issued a clarification stating that the notification is not linked to the ongoing CJP protests. According to the police, the order is a routine quarterly extension of powers under the National Security Act, 1980, which is renewed every three months as part of the standard administrative process.

The police further stated that the current renewal, covering the period July 19, 2026 to October 18, 2026, was issued on July 15, 2026 and that no special request or order was initiated in connection with the recent events.
