Delhi HC to Hear PIL Seeking Mandatory Body-Worn Cameras for Police, RAF During Crowd-Control Duties

The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear tomorrow a PIL seeking mandatory use of body-worn cameras by Delhi Police and RAF personnel deployed for crowd-control, protest-management and dispersal duties.

The plea seeks directions to frame and implement a binding SOP mandating continuous recording, along with safeguards for storage, retention and evidentiary use of the footage.

The petition has been filed against the backdrop of the July 2026 Jantar Mantar protests, where much of the footage documenting police action and violence within the crowd was captured by bystanders.

The plea contends that mandatory body cameras would provide an objective record of police-citizen encounters and strengthen accountability during crowd-control operations.
