Zubeen Garg Death Case: Gauhati High Court Grants Bail; Finds No Prima Facie Material Supporting Murder Conspiracy Allegation

Amritprava Mahanta v. State of Assam, Decided on 09.10.2026

Zubeen Garg Death Case Bail

The Gauhati High Court has granted bail to an accused in the case relating to the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore on September 19, 2025, observing that the materials collected during the investigation and evidence recorded during trial did not disclose a prima facie case of murder conspiracy against her.

Justice Pranjal Das noted that 124 prosecution witnesses had been examined. The Court observed that the statements of witnesses, documents and evidence recorded so far did not substantiate the allegations that the accused had fed alcohol to Garg, played a role in organising the Singapore trip or yacht excursion, or encouraged him to swim without a life jacket.

The Court also considered that the accused had been in custody since October 3, 2025, had no criminal antecedents, and had undergone nearly a year of undertrial detention. Bail was granted on a bond of ₹50,000 with two sureties of like amount, subject to conditions including cooperation with the trial, non-interference with witnesses or evidence, and obtaining the trial court’s permission before travelling abroad.

The Court clarified that its observations were confined to the consideration of bail and would not affect the merits of the ongoing trial.
