AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has approached the Supreme Court challenging the manner in which the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is being conducted. Advocate Nizam Pasha mentioned the writ petition before a Bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, seeking its listing alongside similar matters scheduled to be heard on Thursday.

The Chief Justice asked whether the petition concerned the same issue as the matters already scheduled for hearing and asked counsel to identify the similar cases. Counsel responded that the relevant matters had been mentioned in the memorandum submitted to the Court.

“

“We will see and tag,” the CJI said.

The plea comes amid ongoing legal challenges concerning the Election Commission of India’s SIR exercise, which involves intensive verification and revision of electoral rolls. The exercise has drawn scrutiny over voter inclusion, deletion of names and the procedures adopted for verifying eligibility.

The Supreme Court has been considering several petitions relating to the SIR process. In its May 2026 judgment concerning the Bihar SIR, the Court upheld the Election Commission’s authority to conduct the revision, while examining the governing statutory framework and the constitutional requirement of free and fair elections.
