Gujarat HC Denies Temporary Bail to Asaram Bapu for Meeting Ill Wife; Grants Liberty for Video Conferencing

Ashumal @ Asharam v. State of Gujarat & Anr. [Decided on 30-09-2026]

Temporary Bail Video Conferencing

An application was filed before the Gujarat High Court with a prayer to release Asaram Bapu on temporary bail for 20 days as his wife was critically ill and hospitalised.

By an order dated 29-09-2026, the Court directed the local police to verify the cause stated in the application seeking bail. Hence, a report was produced before the Court along with the medical test reports and the doctor’s statements.

The respondents contended that the wife had responded to the treatment and that she was stable, meaning that she would be discharged within 2-3 days. It was also mentioned that the condition was not critical as the wife only had breathing difficulty.

A Division Bench of Justice Gita Gopi and Justice L.S. Pirzada noted that the Assistant Police Commissioner’s report mentioned that the patient was under the care of her relatives, disciples, and one personal doctor. Hence, the Court found no reason to allow the present application. However, the Court held that the applicant could make a prayer before the Jail Superintendent to speak to his wife through video conferencing.

Thus, the application was disposed of.
