The Madras High Court has granted an ad interim injunction in a copyright infringement suit filed by Super Cassettes Industries Pvt. Ltd., seeking to prevent the unauthorised broadcast of the upcoming film “Pati Patni Aur Woh Do.” The plaintiff moved the court, citing apprehended piracy ahead of the film’s scheduled release on May 15, 2026.
Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy noted that the plaintiff had established prima facie ownership of the copyright through a certification issued by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), identifying it as the producer of the film. It further recognised that unauthorised dissemination through internet service providers and cable TV operators could cause irreparable harm if not restrained at this stage.
Accordingly, the court issued interim directions restraining the respondents from facilitating or enabling unlawful transmission of the film, while also requiring the plaintiff to provide indemnity to safeguard any legitimate business interests that may be affected by the order.
“In matters of this nature, it is likely that irreversible injury will occur, unless unlawful broadcast is prevented. At the same time, in view of the expansive nature of the relief claimed, it is possible that the legitimate business interest of one or more respondents may be affected. Therefore, it is necessary that the plaintiff shall indemnify in respect thereof.”
The interim order will remain in force until June 22, 2026, with notices issued to all respondents and further proceedings scheduled for that date.
