MP High Court Seeks Centre, State’s Response on Tiger Deaths in Kanha National Park; Calls for Details of Preventive and Curative Measures

Shabir Momin v. State NCT of Delhi, Decided on 29.05.2026

Tiger Deaths in Kanha

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued notice to the Union of India, State authorities and other respondents in a petition concerning tiger deaths in the Kanha National Park, directing them to disclose the preventive and curative measures undertaken to address the issue.

A Division Bench of Justice Vivek Jain and Justice Ajay Kumar Nirankari passed the order while hearing a writ petition filed by Subit Chakrabarti. Senior Advocate Ansuman Singh, along with Advocate Prateek Rusia, appeared for the petitioner. The Union Government was represented by Deputy Solicitor General S.M. Guru and Additional Solicitor General Sunil Jain, while the State was represented by Deputy Advocate General Swapnil Ganguly.

At the outset, the Court issued notice to all respondents. Counsel appearing for the Union Government and the State accepted notice on behalf of their respective authorities.

Seeking a comprehensive response on the issue, the Bench directed the respondents to file replies within two weeks. Significantly, the Court specifically ordered the authorities to place on record the preventive and curative measures adopted by them in relation to tiger deaths occurring in the Kanha National Park.

The direction indicates the Court’s concern regarding wildlife conservation and the adequacy of steps being taken by authorities to protect the tiger population in one of India’s premier tiger reserves.

The matter has been directed to be listed immediately after the summer vacation, in the week commencing June 22, 2026, for further consideration.
