National Green Tribunal Directs Deputy Conservator of Forests to Probe Illegal Tree Felling in Delhi’s Civil Lines

(Ravi Kant Sharma vs Govt of NCT Delhi & Ors, order dated October 13, 2025)

illegal tree felling

The National Green Tribunal of Delhi on October 13, 2025 heard an Original Application (OA) against illegal tree felling outside two residential premises. Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Chairperson, and Dr. A. Senthil Vel, Expert Member after careful consideration urged the Deputy Conservator of Forests to probe into the matter without delay.

The applicant approached the NGT (National Green Tribunal) alleging that 4–5 mature trees were illegally being felled within and outside the premises of House No. 1-E/45 and 1-D/45 at Civil Lines, Delhi. The respondents No. 5 and 7 were alleged to be responsible for the unauthorized cutting of trees according to the petitioner who also, referred to a complaint dated September 1, 2025, which he submitted to the Tree Officer/Deputy Conservator of Forests. The counsel of the applicant urged that despite bringing the issue to notice, the concerned authority did not show any effective action. Thus the applicant sought the Tribunal’s intervention for preventing further environmental damage.

The Tribunal noted that, as the applicant had already taken the matter to the Tree Officer in accordance with the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994, it would be appropriate for that authority to verify the facts and, if the allegations proved to be true, to take necessary remedial action. Therefore, the Tree Officer was directed by the Tribunal to complete this exercise thoroughly preferably within three months from the date of the receipt of the order, and the application was disposed accordingly.
