Delhi Waste Mounds

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) Principal Bench, New Delhi, has taken serious note of the continuing waste accumulation at the Bawana and Singhola landfill sites in Delhi, observing violations of environmental norms and improper waste management. The matter arose from a Hindustan Times report titled “New waste mounds creep up on capital” .

During the hearing on October 16, 2025, a Bench comprising Justice Prakash Shrivastava (Chairperson) and Dr. A. Senthil Vel (Expert Member) examined the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) affidavit, which revealed that the Bawana landfill’s existing volume, 26.80 lakh cubic metres has exceeded the approved capacity of 22.68 lakh cubic metres under the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) consent order. The report also acknowledged lapses in maintaining permissible height and slope ratios.

At the Singhola site, MCD admitted that despite clearing the accumulated silt earlier this year, fresh dumping resumed in July 2025 due to pre-monsoon desilting operations, and a treatment facility for daily disposal is still under development.

Finding the disclosures indicative of environmental non-compliance, the Tribunal directed the DPCC to file an action-taken report and the MCD to submit its progress report within four weeks. The matter has been listed for further hearing on January 15, 2026.
