NGT Issues Notice to Central Pollution Control Board for Pollution by Detachable Caps used in Packaged Drinking Water and Beverages

Aakash Ranison v. Central Pollution Control Board & Ors. [Decided on 20-02-2026]

NGT notice plastic bottle caps

In an original application filed before the Principal Bench of the National Green Tribunal, New Delhi, raising a grievance regarding plastic pollution caused by plastic bottle caps used extensively in packaged drinking water and beverage bottles, a coram of Justice Prakash Shrivastava (Chairperson) and Dr. Afroz Ahmad (Expert member) issued notice to the respondents.

It was asserted that even though all plastic bottles are collected, their detachable caps are not, which causes environmental pollution. It was submitted that in other countries, the use of ‘tethered caps’ is prevalent, so that the plastic cap attached to the bottle is collected along with the bottle.

The NGT issued a notice to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and other respondents, directing them to file their responses in the form of affidavits at least a week before the next date of hearing. Further, the NGT stated that a larger issue regarding plastic waste collection and the regulation of the EPR regime was already pending and directed that the present matter be listed along with the said cases on 26-02-2026.
