In a statement posted on X, the DCP New Delhi said, “As per orders of Hon’ble High Court and on expert medical advise due to the deteriorating health condition of Sh. Sonam Wangchuk, he has been shifted to the hospital for essential medical care.”

The police further stated that while complying with the High Court’s directions, protesters attempted to obstruct the exercise, leading to a brief commotion. However, it asserted that the police exercised “maximum restraint” and completed the operation safely. It also appealed to protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar to vacate the site peacefully.

The action follows the Delhi High Court’s order directing the authorities to ensure daily medical monitoring of Wangchuk by government doctors during his indefinite fast. The Court had further directed that if his health condition worsened, the authorities should undertake whatever medical intervention was necessary to safeguard his life, while also ensuring that his dignity and legal rights were protected.

The High Court had, on July 16, 2026, disposed of the petition after recording the assurances of the authorities regarding continuous medical supervision. Saturday’s hospitalisation marks the first major medical intervention undertaken pursuant to those directions.
