The Supreme Court has clarified that its earlier order regulating the use of live-streamed court proceedings does not impose a blanket prohibition on recognised news organisations from reporting court proceedings, while reiterating that audio and video clips of court hearings cannot be used as part of such reportage.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana noted that confusion had arisen regarding paragraph 11 of its order dated July 24, 2026, dealing with live-streaming and recording of court proceedings.

The Court recalled that, in its previous order, it had directed the Union Government to place before it a proposal prepared in consultation with the concerned Ministries for implementing the reliefs sought in the petitions. It had also directed all jurisdictional High Courts to submit status reports regarding adoption of the Model Rules for Live Streaming and Recording of Court Proceedings, besides issuing certain interim directions.

Clarifying the scope of its earlier directions, the Bench emphasised that recognised news organisations remain free to inform the public about courtroom proceedings and legal developments. The Court observed:

“

“The earlier order is not to be construed as imposing a blanket prohibition on the reporting of court proceedings by recognised news outlets. Such outlets may continue to report on court proceedings and inform the general public of legal developments and judicial pronouncements. However, audio or video clips of the court proceedings shall not be utilised in the course of such reportage.”

The Bench further clarified that although news organisations may continue reporting court proceedings, they would remain bound by the restrictions contained in paragraph 10 of its earlier order. Consequently, paragraph 11 of the July 24 order stands clarified to that extent.

The Court also allowed an intervention application in the matter, granted the respondents four weeks to file their counter affidavits, and listed the case for further hearing on September 18, 2026.
