The Supreme Court on Thursday extended the mediation process in the dispute surrounding the family trust and estate of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, after noting that the proceedings before former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud were progressing satisfactorily and appeared to be moving towards an amicable resolution.

A Bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran was informed that six mediation sessions had already been held, during which former CJI Chandrachud had interacted extensively with all members of the Kapur family involved in the dispute. Taking note of the progress, the Court granted the parties time till November 2, 2026, for the mediation process to continue.

The dispute concerns the RK Family Trust and the estate of the late Sunjay Kapur, and involves his mother Rani Kapur and his widow Priya Kapur. The mediation was initiated by the Supreme Court in May this year in an effort to facilitate an amicable settlement and avoid prolonged litigation.

During the hearing, the Bench considered the preliminary report submitted by the mediator and recorded that the mediation had made substantial progress. Observing that the parties appeared to be moving towards a mutually acceptable resolution, the Court decided to continue the mediation process instead of proceeding with adjudication.

The Supreme Court also directed that the fees of former CJI D.Y. Chandrachud, who is acting as mediator, shall be borne by the RK Family Trust.
