Plea in Supreme Court Against INDIA Bloc Leaders’ Entry Into Supreme Court Filing Counter

Supreme Court Filing Counter Incident

A plea was mentioned before the Supreme Court concerning the entry of INDIA bloc leaders into the Court’s filing counter during their march to the Supreme Court on October 12. During the proceedings, the Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana indicated that petitions arising from different incidents would be categorised and considered separately.

During the hearing, Senior Advocate Gaurav Bhatia addressed the writ petition filed by lawyers concerning an incident inside the Supreme Court premises. He said the petition’s defects would be cured and requested that it be listed the following day.

Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan suggested that the incident inside the Court premises be dealt with separately from the matters concerning protesters on the streets.

“

“these are separate issues, I would suggest you can segment it, if it is incident which took place in the court yesterday, I don’t think that is linked to our issues which we are dealing with protesters on the streets and what’s happened with them. So, I suggest that these can be taken separately, obviously they have to be heard urgently but they can be taken separately,” he said.

CJI Surya Kant responded that the Court had broadly identified three sets of matters and that any additional category could be taken up separately.

The Bench indicated that the petitions would be grouped according to the issues involved, and asked that procedural defects be cured and the relevant issues clearly identified to assist the Registry in determining which matters were similar.

The development came after INDIA bloc leaders, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, marched towards the Supreme Court to raise concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged irregularities in the electoral process. After police barricaded the march, a joint petition was filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of Rahul Gandhi and 10 other Opposition leaders.
