The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned by two weeks a public interest litigation seeking comprehensive directions to curb paper leak cases across the country. During the hearing, Senior Advocate Vikas Singh submitted that the petition broadly seeks directions for a standard investigation procedure, a time-bound investigation mechanism, and measures to trace and confiscate the properties of those involved in paper leak rackets.

The Bench observed that the issues raised in the petition were already under consideration and indicated that it was not inclined to pass directions at this stage. The matter was accordingly directed to be listed on 11.08.2026.

The PIL, filed by Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, seeks directions to the Centre and States to formulate a standard questionnaire and Special Investigation Procedure (SIP) for paper leak cases to ensure time-bound investigation and speedy trials. It also seeks directions for assessment and confiscation of the movable and immovable properties of perpetrators and their family members allegedly acquired through proceeds of paper leak offences.
