The Supreme Court on Thursday decided to reconstitute the Bench hearing a review plea concerning the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) proceedings against Karti P. Chidambaram, after both sides consented to the matter being heard by a newly constituted Bench.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Karti Chidambaram, and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the ED, gave their consent to the reconstitution.
The matter was earlier being heard by a Bench comprising CJI Surya Kant and Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and N. Kotiswar Singh. The earlier bench had issued notice in the matter in 2022. During Thursday’s hearing, the Court noted that listing the matter before the original Bench would require disturbing the composition of three other Benches.
Since neither side had any objection to the matter being heard by another Bench, the Court decided that it would be taken up by a reconstituted Bench comprising CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymala Bagchi and V. Mohan.
