The Supreme Court has notified a revised Roster of Work for Fresh Cases, effective July 13, 2026, under the orders of the Chief Justice of India. The new roster allocates fresh matters to individual judges based on subject-wise case categories, streamlining the assignment of cases across the Court.

As per the notification, the Chief Justice of India will continue to hear matters relating to the appointment of constitutional functionaries, arbitration, Armed forces and alternative dispute resolution, banking, Bar Council, civil and criminal law, direct and indirect taxation, insolvency, intellectual property, election laws, environmental matters, land acquisition, education, and references under Articles 143 and 317 of the Constitution, among several other categories.

The roster also earmarks subject-specific jurisdictions for individual judges. Justice Vikram Nath has been assigned, among others, matters concerning Armed Forces, bar councils and advocates, criminal law, environmental law, family law, labour laws, service matters, tenders, and PILs. Justice B.V. Nagarathna will deal with arbitration, Armed Forces banking, Indirect and Direct taxation, insolvency, company law, competition law, intellectual property, insurance, telecom, securities laws, and related matters. Justice M.M. Sundresh, Justice Pamidighantam Sri Narasimha, Justice J.B. Pardiwala, Justice Dipankar Datta, Justice Sanjay Kumar, and other puisne judges have similarly been allocated specified subject categories under the revised roster.

Additionally, the Supreme Court has constituted two special Division Benches to exclusively hear the oldest pending civil and criminal matters on non-miscellaneous days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). The Division Bench headed by Justice P.K. Mishra and the Bench headed by Justice S.V.N. Bhatti will exclusively take up the oldest civil matters, while the Division Benches headed by Justice Manoj Misra and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan will exclusively hear the oldest criminal matters on these designated working days.

The notification provides that all fresh filings will be listed before the concerned judge or bench in accordance with the revised subject-wise allocation from July 13, 2026, ensuring uniformity in the distribution of work within the Supreme Court.
