Supreme Court Grants Bail to Sahara Group Employee Anil Abraham in Money Laundering Case

Anil Vailaparampil Abraham v. Directorate of Enforcement, Kolkata, Decided on 16.10.2026

Supreme Court Money Laundering Bail

The Supreme Court has granted bail to Anil Vailaparampil Abraham, a Sahara Group employee arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case linked to Sahara Group entities. The Court considered his prolonged incarceration and the delay in commencement of trial, which remained at the pre-cognisance stage.

The accused was arrested on July 11, 2025, in connection with ECIR KLZO-I/21/2023, arising from multiple FIRs registered across various States against Sahara Group entities and their officials. The defence highlighted that Abraham was the only accused in custody, while the other accused persons were on bail. Co-accused J.P. Verma had been granted bail by the Special Court in November 2025.

The defence also submitted that the investigation against the accused was complete, although further investigation in the matter remained ongoing. The prosecution complaint relies on 108 relied-upon documents spanning approximately 12,000 pages and cites 33 witnesses. A supplementary prosecution complaint filed in January 2026 added five accused, 12 additional documents comprising approximately 600 pages, and three witnesses.

During the hearing, the Court emphasised the prolonged incarceration and delay in the proceedings while considering the grant of bail. The matter also involved submissions concerning expediting the trial and framing of charges.
