The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the ongoing trial before a Bhopal Sessions Court in the unnatural death case of Twisha Sharma and issued notice on a plea filed by her father, Navnidhi Sharma, seeking transfer of the trial to Delhi. The matter was heard by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi.
The petitioner has expressed apprehension that a fair trial may not be possible in Madhya Pradesh, particularly because one of the accused, Giribala Singh, is a former district and sessions judge in Bhopal.
The transfer plea seeks to move the proceedings from the court of the Tenth District and Additional Sessions Judge in Bhopal to a competent court in Delhi. A separate application sought a stay of the trial while the Supreme Court considered the transfer request.
The trial had reached the stage of arguments on the framing of charges before the Supreme Court intervened.
Background of the Case
Twisha Sharma, 33, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, 2026, around five months after her marriage to Samarth Singh, a practising advocate. Her husband and mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, a retired judicial officer, are accused in the case.
Following concerns over the initial investigation, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the matter in May 2026. The investigation was subsequently transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
