Actor Imran Khan on Monday tendered an unconditional apology before the Bombay High Court for participating in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Advait Sethna was hearing Khan’s petition challenging the October 14 ‘Leave India Notice’ issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), directing him to leave India by October 28.
During the hearing, the Court observed that Imran Khan, being an OCI cardholder, could not be placed at par with Indian citizens and remarked that he did not have a right to criticise the country in the manner alleged. The Bench asked him to tender an unconditional apology or express regret on oath or by way of an undertaking, with an assurance that such participation would not be repeated.
Imran Khan subsequently tendered an undertaking before the Court. The Bench also questioned the FRRO’s decision to issue the Leave India Notice without first affording him an opportunity to explain his position, particularly considering that he had been residing in India for over four decades and had no antecedents, as noted by the Court.
The Leave India Notice, which had earlier been kept in abeyance till November 2, has now been kept in abeyance till the next date of hearing, ie. December 7, 2026.
