CJI Condemns False Social Media Posts Misattributing Remarks to Him

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has strongly condemned the circulation of fabricated social media posts falsely attributing remarks to him.

In a press release issued on Friday, the Office of the Chief Justice of India stated that certain posts circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), particularly by the account “@UnreservedMERIT”, had falsely attributed a statement to the Chief Justice concerning representation in public offices and social exploitation.

The statement clarified that the remarks attributed to the Chief Justice are “wholly baseless, malicious, and demonstrably false.”

Condemning the circulation of the fabricated quote in the “strongest possible terms,” the release described the act as a “vile, brazen, and mischievous concoction.” It further stated that manufacturing fictitious statements and attributing them to the country’s highest judicial office amounted to “rank dishonesty, deliberate social incitement, and contempt for constitutional values.”

The statement added that such reckless misinformation strikes at the foundation of public trust in the judiciary and the rule of law.

The Chief Justice also called upon citizens, media organisations, and social media platforms to refrain from amplifying false and fabricated content online.
