A Delhi Court on Sunday remanded Swatantra Bhardwaj to one day of judicial custody in connection with the alleged assault of the father of a teenage Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) activist during a Jantar Mantar protest in July.

Judicial Magistrate First Class Anjali Singh, sitting as the duty magistrate at Patiala House Courts, passed the order after Bhardwaj was produced before the Court upon expiry of his one-day police custody. He will be produced before the concerned roster judge on Monday.

Bhardwaj was detained in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday, hours after the CJP staged a protest outside the Parliament Street Police Station demanding his arrest. The Delhi Police subsequently added provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and criminal intimidation to the FIR concerning the alleged assault. A separate POCSO case has also been registered against him.

Bhardwaj came under scrutiny after his claims in a video podcast about assaulting the father of the CJP protester went viral. In the video, he allegedly claimed to have political connections. Advocates Swati Khanna, Mohd. Yasin, Rishav Rajan and Rishabh Singh appeared for the victim.
