The Delhi High Court on Friday heard a petition filed by the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) challenging takedown notices purportedly issued by the Delhi Police to social media platform X, seeking removal of the organisation’s account and several posts.
Justice Amit Mahajan was hearing the matter. It was submitted that X’s internal investigation had found that the notice was fake and had not been issued by the Delhi Police. It was further submitted that the Delhi Police counsel had no knowledge of the notice.
X further submitted that it had lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police alleging that someone had abused its systems and impersonated a police officer to submit the purported takedown request. In view of the finding that the notice was fake, X stated that it would not take down the content.
The petition was filed after X notified SFLC of takedown requests purportedly made by the Delhi Police against its X account and several posts. The notices, dated October 31 and November 2, 2026, reportedly sought action against 42 URLs, including SFLC’s account and posts by other users.
SFLC had questioned the legal basis of the notices, alleging that they sought removal of its account and posts without disclosing any supporting court order. The organisation also raised concerns over the authority of the officer named as the issuing authority.
