Justice DK Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court has nominated Senior Advocate Sonia Mathur and Advocate Monika Arora as the two women members to be co-opted to the Bar Council of Delhi, pursuant to the Supreme Court’s order dated September 2, 2026.
A September 15 communication issued by the Delhi High Court Registrar General to the Secretary of the Bar Council of Delhi states that the Chief Justice has nominated Mathur and Arora as women members to complete the composition of the Bar Council of Delhi.
The nomination follows the Supreme Court’s order dated September 2, 2026 in M. Varadhan v. Union of India & Ors., W.P.(C) No. 1049/2026, concerning the co-option of women members to fulfil the 30% representation for women in State Bar Councils. Under the scheme, 20% of the women’s representation is to be secured through election and the remaining 10% through co-option.
