The Delhi High Court has issued notice on a writ petition seeking directions to the Union Government to provide diplomatic, consular and facilitative assistance to an Indian citizen who was deported from the United Kingdom following criminal proceedings initiated against him there.
Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav directed issuance of notice to the respondents and granted them time to file their replies before the next date of hearing fixed for September 17, 2026. The Court also directed the respondents to take instructions and place their stand on record.
According to the petition, the individual travelled to the United Kingdom in 2022 and subsequently entered into a personal relationship that culminated in a marriage ceremony in Leicester in March 2023. The petitioner alleges that he later became the victim of financial exploitation, coercion, pressure to undergo religious conversion, misuse of immigration processes and false criminal accusations, which ultimately resulted in his arrest, imprisonment and deportation from the United Kingdom in January 2024.
The plea states that despite approaching several authorities, including the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, Indian diplomatic authorities and the NRI Wing of Punjab Police, no meaningful assistance has been extended to help him pursue legal remedies in the United Kingdom. The petitioner claims that the criminal allegations and deportation history have adversely impacted his ability to obtain visas and pursue employment opportunities abroad.
The matter will now be considered after the respondents file their replies.
