The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the restoration of the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) account on X, after the Union Government informed the Court that it had no objection to the handle being unblocked.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma was hearing a petition filed by Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the satirical digital collective, challenging the blocking of the account in India. The account had earlier been withheld pursuant to blocking directions issued by the Central Government under the Information Technology framework on grounds of national security.
When the matter was taken up, the Centre informed the Court that the competent authority had reconsidered the issue and did not oppose restoration of the account. Recording the submission, the Court directed X Corp. to unblock the handle.
The Court clarified, however, that while the account itself would be restored, the petitioner would remain bound by law and any future objectionable content would be dealt with in accordance with the applicable legal framework.
The petition stemmed from the blocking of the CJP’s X account in May 2026. At an earlier hearing, the High Court had declined interim relief and instead directed the Review Committee under the Information Technology Rules to examine the blocking order before the matter was taken up again.
