Supreme Court Advocate Assaulted on IndiGo Flight; FIR Registered

Suhaan Mukherjee Flight Assault

An FIR has been registered following an incident in which Supreme Court Advocate was assaulted by a co-passenger while travelling on an IndiGo flight to Jabalpur.

According to senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha, the Advocate was travelling with his three-year-old child when he was assaulted, threatened and subjected to abusive behaviour while passengers were deboarding the aircraft.

Sr Adv Vivek Tankha questioned why neither the accused was detained at the airport nor prevented from leaving despite the assault allegedly taking place before passengers had exited the aircraft. He also criticised the response of the Madhya Pradesh Police, stating that instead of promptly apprehending the accused, Mukherjee and his three-year-old child remained at Khamaria Police Station for nearly four hours after the incident.

Calling the handling of the incident “very poor”, Sr Adv questioned the role of airport security and policing, asking why an individual accused of assaulting a fellow passenger was allowed to leave the airport without being detained.

An FIR has since been registered in connection with the incident.
