Gary Born Brings Long-Standing WilmerHale Arbitration Team to King & Spalding

International Arbitration Team Move

In one of the most prominent lateral moves in the international arbitration market, renowned arbitration lawyer Gary Born has led a five-partner team from WilmerHale to King & Spalding, significantly strengthening the firm’s global International Disputes practice.

The team comprises Born, Rachael Kent, Franz Schwarz, Marleen Krueger and Danielle Morris, with additional lawyers expected to join in the coming weeks. The partners will be based across King & Spalding’s London, Washington, D.C., and New York offices.

Born, widely regarded as one of the world’s leading international arbitration practitioners and scholars, will co-head King & Spalding’s International Disputes practice alongside Elizabeth Silbert. He is one of only two lawyers globally to be recognised as a “Star Individual” for international arbitration in both the Chambers Global and Chambers UK guides.

King & Spalding said

“the move combines two of the world’s largest and most respected international arbitration and litigation practices while substantially enhancing its disputes capabilities and strengthening its strategic growth plans in London.”

The incoming partners have worked together for more than two decades and are recognised for handling high-value cross-border disputes across common law and civil law jurisdictions. Their practice spans sectors including energy, financial services, pharmaceuticals and technology, as well as investment treaty arbitration and public international law.

Commenting on the move, Gary Born said

“King & Spalding’s international footprint, commercial litigation capabilities and collaborative culture provide an ideal platform to expand client service. This is a preeminent platform for international disputes globally.”

King & Spalding Chairman Robert Hays said the addition makes the firm’s already established international disputes practice “truly peerless” and represents a significant expansion of its London office, which remains a key growth priority.

Wade Coriell, who previously co-led the firm’s International Disputes practice and is returning to Singapore to help drive its Asia-Pacific disputes strategy, said the two teams share a common commitment to excellence, teamwork and client service. He added that the combined practice offers expertise across virtually every category of cross-border dispute worldwide.
