Akhila P.R. v. State of Kerala [Decided on 18-08-2026]

Priyadarshini Bus Scheme safety

In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed before the Kerala High Court against the Priyadarshini Bus Scheme introduced by the Kerala Government to provide free travel facilities to women, a Division Bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Syam Kumar V.M. dismissed the petition for lack of corroborative material to substantiate the alleged accidents.

The petitioner contended that due to overcrowding, the vehicles operated under the Priyadarshini Bus Scheme had met with accidents. However, the Court noted that this contention was not corroborated by any document and that the accidents may not have occurred due to overcrowding.

The Court stated that in the absence of corroborative material to substantiate the said allegations, there was no reason to entertain the present PIL. Thus, the PIL was dismissed, but the Court directed the Government to ensure the safety of the passengers travelling in the buses.
