‘Pickleball Has Nothing to Do with Pickles, It Was Named After a Dog’: Justice Hrishikesh Roy

The LawStrings Pickleball Premier League, Season 2 commenced with great enthusiasm, bringing together members of the legal fraternity for a unique blend of sport, networking, and professional camaraderie. The event was graced by Chief Guest Justice Hrishikesh Roy, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, alongside ASG Chetan SharmaMr Sachin Puri and Bhumika Indulia as Guest of Honour and other distinguished members of the Bar.

Justice Roy in his address reflected on the growing significance of such initiatives within the legal community, noting the importance of stepping beyond conventional professional spaces. Sharing a light-hearted observation on the sport, he remarked, He remarked that while pickleball “has nothing to do with pickles,” it is believed to have been named after a dog, adding a touch of humour to his address. He further observed that the sport is a fascinating blend of multiple disciplines and serves as a medium to bring people together beyond professional roles.

He further highlighted the value of participation and collective enthusiasm, stating that such events foster meaningful engagement within the fraternity and create opportunities for interaction beyond courtrooms and formal settings.

Delivering the Guest of Honour address, ASG Chetan Sharma emphasised the importance of physical and mental well-being in the legal profession. He noted that a sound body contributes to a sharper and more analytical mind, an essential requirement for legal practice. He also underlined how initiatives like the league provide a platform for lawyers to de-stress and reconnect in a collaborative environment.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sacchin Puri, Vice President, Delhi Bar Association reflected on the vision behind the initiative. He shared that the League was conceptualised to bring together lawyers from diverse backgrounds onto a common platform that encourages interaction beyond courtrooms. He emphasised that one of the key highlights of the event is the strong participation of women lawyers, making it a more inclusive and representative initiative within the legal fraternity.

Speaking on the occasion, Bhumika Indulia highlighted the human side of the profession, observing that spaces like these allow lawyers to step outside rigid professional roles. She noted that the sport acts as a great equaliser, where designations and court achievements take a backseat, and individuals engage simply as participants.

The League, conceptualised by LawStrings Management, continues to stand out as a pioneering initiative in the legal ecosystem encouraging inclusivity, fostering community spirit, and promoting work-life balance.
