The Rajasthan High Court’s Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma has decided not to hear cases from September 1 to September 5 amid protests by lawyers demanding that he be divested of his charge and that a permanent Chief Justice be appointed to the High Court.

Under the new roster finalised by Justice Sharma, no bench has been constituted with him and no regular judicial sittings have been assigned to him during the five-day period. Cases earlier listed before the Acting Chief Justice have also been allocated to other benches.

The development comes after lawyers at the Jaipur and Jodhpur benches protested against Justice Sharma. Police were called to the Jaipur premises to disperse protesting advocates, with visuals showing lawyers raising slogans against the Acting Chief Justice.

Earlier on Monday, the Rajasthan High Court Lawyers Association announced a complete strike till September 6 following an emergency general house meeting. The association also resolved to send representations to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and the President of India seeking action on the issue.

The protests and strike follow demands from the Bar for Justice Sharma to be removed from the charge of Acting Chief Justice and for the appointment of a permanent Chief Justice to the Rajasthan High Court.
