The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed as infructuous a Public Interest Litigation challenging the three farm laws enacted by Parliament in 2020, following their subsequent repeal by the Union Government.
There were several matters before the Supreme Court concerning the validity of the three contentious agricultural reform laws and the farmers’ protests against them. The three laws were:
- Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020;
- Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance; and
- Farm Services Act, 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
The laws were subsequently repealed by Parliament in 2021, following the prolonged farmers’ protests. With the challenged enactments no longer remaining on the statute book, the Court found that the challenge had become infructuous.
