The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Centre, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Bar Council of India (BCI) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking action against the alleged “misuse” and commercial exploitation of oral observations and symbolic expressions made by judges, including activities linked to the “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP).
A Bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana heard the plea filed by Advocate Raja Choudhary and directed that the matter be listed for further hearing on September 10, 2026.
The PIL raises concerns over the alleged use of oral observations and symbolic expressions made during court proceedings for purposes beyond their judicial context. It seeks appropriate action against what the petitioner describes as the misuse and alleged commercial exploitation of such courtroom observations.
The petition also seeks a CBI probe into the alleged existence of a large number of fake advocates and fraudulent law degrees. It raises concerns regarding persons allegedly entering or practising in the legal profession on the basis of fake credentials and seeks an investigation into the issue.
The petitioner has also sought intervention by the concerned authorities in relation to the activities attributed to the “Cockroach Janta Party”, which have become the subject matter of the PIL. The notice has been issued to the Union of India, MeitY, BCI and CBI, with the matter now scheduled to be heard on September 10.
