Supreme Court Stays Madras High Court Ruling in Sreedevi Video–Saregama Music Rights Dispute Over Iconic Telugu-Tamil soundtracks

Music rights dispute stay order

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice and granted an interim stay on the operation of the Madras High Court judgment on the long-running copyright dispute between Saregama – Sreedevi audio rights in several Tamil and Telugu films.

The Special Leave Petition challenging the Madras High Court’s decision was listed before a Bench comprising Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, which issued notice to the respondents and stayed the impugned judgment.

The challenged ruling, delivered by a Division Bench of the Madras High Court on November 19, 2025, had partly allowed Sreedevi Video Corporation’s appeal and remanded the matter for adjudication on merits in respect of the relief of permanent injunction, while upholding the finding that the declaratory relief claimed by Sreedevi Video was barred by limitation
