A UK court has refused bail to Indian lawyer Vijay Aggarwal, who is facing allegations of sexual assault and human trafficking, citing a significant risk of flight given his lack of strong ties to the UK.
At a hearing before Southwark Crown Court, Vijay Aggarwal’s counsel Sasha Wass argued that he was a highly respected practising lawyer in India and proposed substantial bail sureties and other conditions. She submitted that Aggarwal would not abandon his career in India or flee, and argued that extradition proceedings would ensure his return if he did travel to India.
Prosecutor Oliver Wellings opposed bail, citing concerns over flight risk, possible interference with witnesses and what the prosecution described as organised and systematic offending. The prosecution also questioned the suitability of some proposed sureties.
Judge Alexander Milne said Aggarwal had a successful business and was apparently highly respected in India, but noted that his family, business and life were based there. The judge also considered the serious nature of the allegations and was not persuaded that extradition from India would be straightforward if Aggarwal fled.
Vijay Aggarwal remains in custody. A plea hearing is scheduled for later this year, with the trial listed for March 2027.
